Charity and What it Means

.

As a member of the Knight of Columbus we all make a Degree promise of Charity to help our family, fellow brother Knights and neighbors who are in need of our assistance. Charity, the act of giving comes in many forms; it’s a helping hand to someone in need. The help could be in goods and services, tasks of labor or monetary donations and volunteering. A charitable deed of just a phone call to the elderly who is confined at home, a visit to the sick or to the family of a deceased friend.

If we look up the definition of Charity it is described as follows:

  • Love, universal benevolence, good will
  • Liberality to the poor and suffering
  • To benevolent institutions, or worthy causes
  • Generosity

“Charity to be fruitful must cost us…. to love, it is necessary to give: to give it is necessary to be free from selfishness.” (Mother Teresa of Calcutta)

We must be charitable with no reservations and should always give freely without feeling we are compelled.

We should never expect something in return except the satisfaction that we helped someone with a problem.

So the real meaning of charity is; it comes from the warmth of our hearts for the love of our fellow man. It’s the meaning of Knighthood. It is the Christian way of life.

I would like to thank everyone who made the Doo-Wop Sweetheart Charity Dance a success last month especially the volunteers. It was charity and the Knights at their best…

 Keep up the good work.

God Bless

Fraternally yours
